Sorry to write in English but i’m French and don’t speak spanish.
I’m one of those who talked about this news (hopefully stating that it was a strange one because I never heard about before about canalpda and because the tone was strange, if this news were to be true it would have been a great scoop, so I ended by ” info ou intox ” what means ” real info or bad joke “)
The problem with this joke was a double one
– First it shows a clear lack of knowledge of the Spanish culture (I didn’t knew that our April 1rst was December 28 in Spain), and from this point of view it’s an interesting story
– Second this i a very bad joke because this “false news” could be true, and under some extend will probably be true.
For those who didn’t follow this story, Apple build a huge business based on the iPod mania, but the iPod mania will have an end. Exactly as what will happen with the low end digital cameras, it’s very likely that the high end telephones will slowly kill the iPod business, so Apple has no other choice that prepare the switch from the independent music player to a telephone music player.
The information is official, Apple is working with Motorola on this topic.
In order to sell the iPhone (or whatever name i twill have) Apple need to have deal with phone carriers, and these deal will not be easy because Apple intend to make money by using this phone to sell music and carrier struggle to use their network for selling services on the top of pure connexion. So the idea of Apple co-branding a network is not something strange.
See on this topic a very good summary of the situation :
The conclusion of all this relates to the fist point above. I don’t know exactly was is a typical good Spanish December 28 joke, but I’m afraid (and don’t whish that) that canalpda will be at the end the victim of this, loosing credibility and developping a non-serious bad-informed image, because a good April 1rst joke is something that is impossible, and that makes people feel ridiculous when they realize “How could I have believed THAT !!”.. in this case this is absolutely not the case.
It’s very likely that Apple phone strategy (or lack of) will be announced in San Francisco during the Macworld event in 10 days.
At this date (January 10) perhaps we will learn that canalpda joke where in fact a real announce.. a little bit in advance.
Welcome Luc, and thank you very much for your long replay.
Maybe I did not understand you at all, cause we all know Apple is working with Motorola, but that does not mean that Apple could provide telephone services by itself. They can make a phone, but they don’t need to be a mobile carrier. So the “news”, the “scoop” it was this second part, about becoming a “mobile carrier”.
Anyway, it is just a question of days we can see how far is going Apple with this subjetc.
